Prof. AbuBakr S. Bahaj

Professor AbuBakr Bahaj leads the 55-strong Energy and Climate Change Division and the Sustainable Energy Research Group at the University of Southampton, where he holds a Personal Chair in Sustainable Energy.  Professor Bahaj has pioneered sustainable energy research and established the energy theme within the University. These include Renewable Energy (Solar PhotovoltaicsOffshore Wind and Marine Energy), Cities, Energy and Infrastructure, Data and ModellingEnergy and BehaviourEnergy and Buildings, Energy for Development, Environmental Impacts, Microgeneration Technologies. Major research programmes can be found at Professor Bahaj’s work has resulted in over 300 articles, published in international refereed journals and conferences. He holds visiting professorships in Sweden, China and Saudi Arabia. He is a Fellow of the Institution of Civil Engineers, Institution of Engineering Technologies and the Royal Academy of Arts. In 2012, he was appointed Chief Scientific Advisor to Southampton City Council—believed to be the first such appointment in the UK and in 2014; he was names by the UK’s Science Council as one of the UK’s 100 leading practising scientists.

Dr. Leonidas Bourikas is an engineer with more than 9 years of experience in building physics and environmental design of buildings and cities. In his research and professional career he is looking at energy use in buildings (and settlements), low carbon energy strategies and the design of liveable spaces that maximise the occupants’ thermal comfort, satisfaction and productivity.

Dr. Philip Turner

I am a research fellow at the University of Southampton having recently completed my PhD thesis incorporating the fields of cities, urban design and social science. With a first class degree in Civil Engineering and Architecture I value the importance of a multi-disciplinary approach with experience in organising interventions and informing governance in addressing challenges such as transportation, re-zoning and wellbeing.

Researcher co-investigator in the UK–China project “City-Wide Analysis to Propel Cities towards Resource Efficiency and Better Wellbeing” (EPSRC Reference: EP/N010779/1). Other current areas of research include Energy for Development and the energy performance of cities.

Dr. Majbaul Alam is currently working as a researcher with the Sustainable Research Energy Group (SERG, at the faculty of Engineering and Physical Science, University of Southampton, UK. He has been a dedicated member of the Energy for Development (e4D, team under the leadership of Professor AbuBakr S Bahaj since September 2017. Key area of his work is off-grid electrification using renewable energy sources and technologies. With a first class M.Sc. in Marine Sciences Dr. Majbaul started working for Solar Home System projects in the coastal areas of Bangladesh during 2002. Driven by the passion of renewable energy and energy provision for the poor at the bottom of the economic pyramid he completed PhD in Renewable Energy Technology from the De Montfort University in May 2017.

Dr. Phil Wu

Dr. Phil Wu

Dr. Phil Wu is a researcher in Sustainable Energy within Engineering and Physical Sciences at the University of Southampton. His works in city-scale renewable energy applications have contributed to a number of research projects addressing challenges faced by cities. His expertise includes solar photovoltaics, carbon emission reduction technologies, and city-scale energy modelling. His research interests also include evolving cities, smart meters and social wellbeing. His most recent work on an international collaboration between UK and China governments focuses on city-wide analysis to propel cities towards resource efficiency and better wellbeing.

Elizabeth Steele (photo attached) is a senior consultant at DNV GL who specializes in energy efficiency policy and research. She has evaluated a number of energy efficiency incentive schemes run by government and energy suppliers. She currently designs the trials for the Solent Achieving Value from Efficiency project for Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks.

Professor Tim O’Doherty is the head of the Cardiff Marine Energy Research Group at the University of Cardiff, UK. He has 25 years’ experience in successfully leading research programmes. He has published over 170 refereed papers, successfully supervised over 25 PhDs and examined over 60 PhD/EngDs. He has been on the editorial panels of the ICE Energy Journal, The IJoME, the IJME and is a guest editor of a special issue of the JMSE on Tidal Energy.
