Prof. Alberto Borghetti

Alberto Borghetti was born in Cesena Italy on May 29, 1967. He graduated (with honors) in electrical engineering from the University of Bologna, Italy, in 1992. Since then he has been working with the power system group of the same University, where is now a Professor of Electrical Power Systems. His research and teaching activities are in the areas of power system analysis, power system restoration after blackout, electromagnetic transients, optimal generation scheduling, and distribution system operation. He is the author or coauthor of over 150 scientific papers published in peer-reviewed journals or presented at international conferences. He has served as Technical Program Committee chairperson of the 2010 30th Int. Conf. on Lightning Protection, chair of the 2016 Bologna CIGRE Colloquium on Lightning and Power systems, and special reporter for CIGRE 2018. IEEE Fellow (class 2015) for contributions to modeling of power distribution systems under transients conditions, he received the ICLP Scientific Committee Award in 2016 and the 2018 CIGRE Technical Council Award for Study Committee C4. From 2010 to 2017 he served as an Editor of IEEE Transactions on Smart Grid. Currently he is serving as an Editor of IEEE Transactions on Power Systems, Associate Editor of MPCE and, since the beginning of 2019, as Editor-in-Chief of Electrical Engineering – Archiv fur Elektrotechnik.

Dr Chen received M.Phil. degree in Power Electronics from Staffordshire University, England, Ph.D. degree in Power and Control, from University of Durham, England. Dr Chen has been a full Professor with the Department of Energy Technology, Aalborg University, Denmark since 2002.

He is the Danish Principle Investigator for Wind Energy of Sino-Danish Centre for Education and Research (SDC), the leader of Wind Power System Research program at the Department of Energy Technology, Aalborg University.

Professor Chen’s main current research interests are wind energy,power electronics, modern power system and energy systems. He has led many international and national research projects and has supervised many PhD, Postdoctoral research and visiting scholars. Dr Chen is a panel member for many research project evaluations, including European Research Council and other European national research funding organizations. He has served as an international evaluation expert for many research funding organisations, including Belgian, Canada, Finland, Italy, Ireland, Netherland and UK, etc. He has more than 700 technical publications. Dr Chen is an Associate Editor of the IEEE Transactions on Power Electronics, a Subject Editor (wind turbine control) of IET Renewable Power Generation, an Associate Editor of IET Smart Grid, and a member of editor boards of many international journals, a Fellow of IET, a Chartered Engineer in the U.K., and a Fellow of IEEE, a member of European Academy of Sciences and Arts.

Marialaura Di Somma received the MSc Degree (cum laude) in Mechanical Engineering for Energy and Environment and the Ph. D degree in Mechanical Systems Engineering from the University of Naples Federico II in Italy, in 2012 and 2016, respectively. In 2014, she has been Visiting Research Assistant at the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering of the University of Connecticut (CT, USA). Since December 2014, she is Research Engineer of the Smart Grid and Energy Networks Laboratory | Energy Technologies Department of the Italian National Agency for New Technologies, Energy and Sustainable Economic Development (ENEA). Her main research interests include: design and operation optimization of distributed energy resources (DER) in the context of local energy communities through multi-objective approach, bidding strategies of DER aggregators for participation to the various market options, demand response, multi-carrier energy systems modeling and optimization, and power systems design and control. Since 2016, she is member of the Steering Committee and General Assembly of the European Energy Research Alliance – Joint Programme on Smart Grids, whereas since 2017, she is member of Mission Innovation – Innovation Challenge 1 on Smart Grids. She is scientific coordinator of a number of National and European projects on energy communities and smart grid topics, by also acting as Vice Project Coordinator and Work Package Leader. She has supervised several MSc theses, and international fellowship programmes. She also acts as guest editor for special issues associated to international scientific journals. She has been plenary speaker in several scientific conferences, chair in international conferences and member of scientific committees. She is author of many scientific papers published in international journals and proceedings of international conferences, most of them awarded as highly-cited papers.

Yi Ding is a Professor in the College of Electrical Engineering, Zhejiang University (ZJU), also a scholar of Thousand Talent Program for Young Outstanding Scientists of China. Before he joined in ZJU, he was an Associate Professor (permeant position) in Technical University of Denmark (DTU), Denmark. He also held academic positions in University of Alberta, Canada and Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. He was also a Consultant as Energy Economist for Asian Development Bank in 2010.  Prof. Yi Ding was a task leader of the EU FP7 project “EcoGrid EU” – A Prototype for European Smart Grids for designing a real-time market for integrating distributed energy resources and small end-consumers for future power systems. Since he joined in ZJU, he has been the PI and Co-PI of four National Science Foundation of China projects and two National Key R&D Programs focusing on the smart grid and energy market. He is also a member of the Power Market Management Committee of Zhejiang Province, China. His research focuses on Smart Grids, Electricity market, Reliability evaluation, Demand response. He is author of four books and of more than 100 SCI journal publications in these topics.

Mohammad Dolatabadi was born in Tehran, Iran, in 1979. He received the Ph.D. degree in Mathematics from Ferdowsi University of Mashhad, Mashhad, Iran, in 2010. Nikos D. Hatziargyriou is since 1984 a faculty member and since 1995, full professor in Power Systems at the Electrical and Computer Engineering School of the National Technical University of Athens. He is Director of the Postgraduate Programme of “Energy Production and Management”. He is Director of the Energy Systems Laboratory and founder of the “SmartRue” research unit. From April 2015 to September 2019 he was Chairman and until June 2018, CEO of the Hellenic Distribution Network Operator (HEDNO). From February 2007 until September 2012 he was executive Vice-Chair and Deputy CEO of the Public Power Corporation (PPC), responsible for the Transmission and Distribution Divisions. He is Fellow Member of IEEE, past Chair of the Power System Dynamic Performance Committee (PSDPC) and currently Editor in Chief of the IEEE Trans on Power Systems. He is honorary member of CIGRE and past Chair of CIGRE SC C6 “Distribution Systems and Distributed Generation”. He was chair and currently vice-chair of the EU Technology and Innovation Platform on Smart Networks for Energy Transition (ETIP-SNET) and former chair of the European Technology Platform on SmartGrids. He is member of the Energy Committee of the Athens Academy of Science. He has participated in more than 60 RD&D projects funded by the EU Commission, electric utilities and manufacturers for both fundamental research and practical applications. He is author of the book “Microgrids: Architectures and Control” and of more than 200 journal publications and 500 conference proceedings papers. In 2017 he received the IEEE PES Prabha S. Kundur Power System Dynamics and Control Award for “contributions in the dynamic performance and control of power systems with dispersed energy resources”. He is included in the 2016, 2017 and 2019 Thomson Reuters lists of the top 1% most cited researchers.

Antonio Moreno-Munoz is Professor at the Department of Electronics and Computer Engineering, Universidad de Córdoba, Spain where he is the Chair of the Industrial Electronics and Instrumentation R&D Group. He received his Ph.D. and M.Sc. degrees from UNED, Spain in 1998 and 1992, respectively. From 1981 to 1992 he was with RENFE, the Spanish National Railways Company. Since 1992 he has been with the University of Cordoba, where he has been the director of its department, and academic director of the Master in Distributed Renewable Energies.

His research focuses on Smart Cities, Smart Grids, Power Quality, Internet of energy. He has participated in 20 projects and/or R&D contracts, including the management of 9 of them, and has more than 130 publications in these topics.

He is currently Member of European Technology & Innovation Platforms (ETIP) Smart Networks for Energy Transition (SNET) WG4. A senior member of the “Technical Committee on Smart Grids IEEE” of the “Industrial Electronics Society”. Member of the CIGRÉ/CIRED JWG-C4.24 committee “Power Quality and EMC Issues associated with future electricity networks”. He has been a member of the IEC/CENELEC TC-77/SC-77A/WG-9 committee. He has been a member of the ISO International Organization for Standardization AEN/CTN-208/SC-77-210.

He is an evaluator of R&D&I projects for the Estonian Research Council, the Fund for Scientific and Technological Research (FONCYT) of the National Agency for the Promotion of Science and Technology in Argentina and the Directorate General of Research, Development, and Innovation of the Ministry of Science, Innovation, and Universities of Spain. He also serves as Scientific Director of TU Delft’s PowerWeb institute. Before that he was Principal Scientist for Complex Energy Systems at the Austrian Institute of Technology (AIT) / Energy Department, Austria, Head of Business Unit “Sustainable Building Technologies” atthe AIT, CTO of Envidatec Corp., Hamburg (Germany), associate Professor at the University of Pretoria (South Africa), University Assistant at the Vienna University of Technology (Austria), and researcher at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (California). He is active in international committees such as IEEE, CIGRE, or ISO, and is Editor in Chief of the IEEE Magazine on Industrial Electronics. He was an invited assistant professor at the UBI and INESC TEC, Porto, Portugal. Currently, he is a tenure-track professor at the University of Vaasa, Finland. He has been involved in various national, international and EU projects as coordinator, PI and work package leader. He is also the Editor-in-Chief of “International Journal of Renewable Energy Technology”, the Editor of “IEEE Open Access Journal of Power and Energy”, and “IET Renewable Power Generation”. He has been the editor and guest editor of more than 12 special issues in various high level journals. She is the Founder and the Head of the UCL Islands Laboratory, a unique initiative that support sustainable solutions for island nations worldwide.

She has an impressive portfolio of more than 30 research and consultancy projects, on energy and resource use worldwide (Europe, Africa, Asia, South America, Canada) funded by EPSRC, British Council, Innovate UK, EC, industry. Topics include whole energy systems modelling, assessment of high renewable energy integration and interconnections , disaster risk reduction and resilience due to climate change, resource nexus, new business models to support green energy., low carbon energy transition, circular economy.

She published more than 100 papers in high impact journals including Nature Energy and Nature Sustainability, wrote two books Whole Energy Systems Dynamics and Transitioning island nations into sustainable energy hubs and co-edited few others (e.g. Routledge Handbook of the Resource Nexus). Zita Vale is full professor at the Polytechnic Institute of Porto and the director of the Research Group on Intelligent Engineering and Computing for Advanced Innovation and Development (GECAD). She received her diploma in Electrical Engineering in 1986 and her PhD in 1993, both from University of Porto. Zita Vale works in the area of Power and Energy Systems, with special interest in the application of Artificial Intelligence techniques. She has been involved in more than 50 funded projects related to the development and use of Knowledge-Based systems, Multi-Agent systems, Genetic Algorithms, Neural networks, Particle Swarm Intelligence, Constraint Logic Programming and Data Mining. The main application fields of these projects comprise:

– Smart Grids, accommodating an intensive use of Renewable Energy Sources, Distributed Energy Resources (DER) and Distributed Generation (DG). She addresses the management of energy resources, the impact of DER on electrical networks, the negotiation of DER in electricity markets, demand response, storage, energy management in buildings, and electrical vehicles, including the ones with gridable capability (V2G);

– Electricity markets, addressing contracts, prices and tariffs, decision-support for market participants, aggregation, ancillary services, and wholesale and local market simulation;

– Control Center applications, namely intelligent alarm processing, intelligent interfaces and intelligent tutors. She published over 800 works, including more than 100 papers in international scientific journals, and more than 500 papers in international scientific conferences.

Fei Wang (M’09-SM’17) received the B.S. degree from Hebei University, Baoding, China in 1993, the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in electrical engineering from North China Electric Power University (NCEPU), Baoding, China, in 2005 and 2013, respectively. He is currently a Professor with the Department of Electrical Engineering, NCEPU and the State Key Laboratory of Alternate Electrical Power System with Renewable Energy Sources, Baoding and Beijing, China. He is the Director of Smart Energy Network Integrated Operation Research Center (SENIOR) and the leader of “Double First-Class” research team project at NCEPU. He was a Visiting Professor with the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Urbana, IL, USA, from 2016 to 2017. He was a Researcher with the Department of Electrical Engineering, Tsinghua University, Beijing, China, from 2014 to 2016. Prof. Wang is an Editor of IET Renewable Power Generation (IET-RPG), IEEE Open Access Journal of Power and Energy (OAJPE) and Protection and Control of Modern Power Systems (PCMP). He is an IEEE Senior Member and the Expert Member of IEC SC8A/WG2. He was the Guest Editor for the Special Issue on “Demand Side Management and Market Design for Renewable Energy Support and Integration” of IET Renewable Power Generation. He supervised more than 50 Post-docs, Ph.D. and M.Sc. students. He has authored or coauthored more than 180 publications, including 80 journal papers. He was the recipient of the 2018 Technical Invention First Award of Hebei Province, the 2018 Patent Award of Hebei Province, the 2014 Natural Sciences Academic Innovation Achievement Award of Hebei Province, the 2018 China Electric Power Science and Technology Progress Award, and the 2014 Outstanding Doctoral Dissertation Award of NCEPU. He was the General Chair of the 2017 International Seminar of Renewable Energy Power Forecasting and Absorption Technology and 2018 International Seminar of Integrated Energy and Smart Microgrid Technology.

Prof. Dario Zaninelli

Professor Dario ZANINELLI was born in Romano di Lombardia, Italy in 1959. In 1984 he graduated with honours (“lode”) in electrical engineering from the Politecnico di Milano. In 1989 he became Doctor of Science in Electrical Engineering at Politecnico di Milano, after a
period as “visiting scholar” at Worcester Polytechnic Institute, MA, USA. In 1990 he started the academic career as lecturer, after winning a national academic competition, in the field of study of power systems within the Department of Electrical Engineering, Politecnico di Milano, Italy. In 2002 he was appointed full professor in electrical engineering teaching graduate and undergraduate classes on electrical systems for energy processes, electric system for transportation, electrical safety, network automation and protection systems, tools for network simulation at Politecnico di Milano, Italy.

From 2006 until 2010 he was President of the Course Engineering Studies for Transportation and Logistics. Since 2011 he his Vice Rector of Politecnico di Milano where he chairs the Piacenza Campus of Politecnico di Milano.

Dario ZANINELLI was (2016-2018) member of the National Board of Trustees for the Associate and Full Professorship in the field of the Electrical Energy Engineering. At the present he is President of GUSEE, the Italian Group of professors and researchers in the field of Electric Power Systems.

He has been also invited to the U.S. National Science Foundation in 1990; as visiting professor at the University of Texas at Austin in 1994 and 2002, as professor at the University POLITEHNICA of Bucharest in 2007.

Dario ZANINELLI is author or co-author of over 250 scientific papers in ISI reviewed journals or presented at international conferences organized by IEEE, CIGRE, IET, CIRED etc., and member of committee of IEEE awards, to which we should add many keynote speeches in Italian and International Conferences for engineers and architects. He has performed as principal researcher and co-researcher in more than 50 research contracts and grants sponsored by the local industries, Ministry of Research (Italy), CESI, ENEL, ENI; Italian Railway Companies, holding also a patent. He is single author of book “Electrical systems for High Speed Railway”, in 2010 (in Italian) and co-author of “Electrical Railway Transportation Systems”, IEEE Wiley, published in March 2018.

In recognition for his significant achievements, Professor Dario ZANINELLI was elevated in June 2nd 2007 by the President of the Italian Republic to “Grande Ufficiale al merito” “for his contribution to the Italian engineering sector in realizing the High Speed Railway”.

In 18th October 2017 the University POLITEHNICA of Bucharest awarded Dario ZANINELLI the title of Doctor Honoris Causa.

He is also a researcher with the Electrical and Computer Department, Isfahan, Isfahan, Iran. He is the author/co-author of more than 75 papers. Furthermore, he has participated in more than 15 industrial projects overseas.
Dr. Alhelou was the recipient of The Sentinels of Science and Research Award in 2019. He has been included in the 2018 & 2019 Publons’s list of the top 1% best reviewer and researchers in the field of engineering and cross-field. He was the recipient of the Outstanding Reviewer Award from Energy Conversion and Management journal in 2016, ISA Transactions journal in 2018, Applied Energy journal in 2019, and many other awards. He was also the recipient of the Best Young Researcher Award in the Arab Student Creative Forum among 61 researchers from 16 countries at Alexandria University, Alexandria, Egypt, in 2011. Prof S. N. Singh obtained his M. Tech. and Ph. D. in Electrical Engineering from Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur, in 1989 and 1995. Presently, he is Professor (HAG), Department of Electrical Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur, India. Before joining IIT Kanpur as Associate Professor, Dr Singh worked with UP State Electricity Board as Assistant Engineer from 1988 to 1996, with Roorkee University (now IIT Roorkee) as Assistant Professor from 1996 to 2000 and with Asian Institute of Technology, Bangkok, Thailand as Assistant Professor from 2001 to 2002. He was Vice-Chancellor of Madan Mohan Malviya University of Technology Gorakhpur during April 2017 to July 2020. Dr Singh received several awards including Young Engineer Award 2000 of Indian National Academy of Engineering (INAE), Khosla Research Award of IIT Roorkee, and Young Engineer Award of CBIP New Delhi (India), 1996. Prof Singh is receipt of Humboldt Fellowship of Germany (2005, 2007) and Otto-monsted Fellowship of Denmark (2009-10). Prof Singh became first Asian to receive 2013 IEEE Educational Activity Board Meritorious Achievement Award in Continuing Education. He is also recipients of INAE Outstanding Teacher Award 2016 and IEEE R10 region (Asia-Pacific) Outstanding Volunteer Award 2016. Dr Singh is appointed as IEEE Distinguish Lecturer of Power & Energy Society from 2019 and Industry application Society for 2019-2021. He is also recipient of INAE Outstanding Teacher Award 2016.

His research interests include power system restructuring, FACTS, power system optimization & control, security analysis, wind power, etc. Prof Singh has published more than 500 papers in International/national journals/conferences and supervised 31 PhD (12 PhD under progress). He has also written 23 book chapters, 6 Edited books and 2 text-books one on Electric Power Generation, Transmission and Distribution and second is Basic Electrical Engineering, published by PHI, India. Prof Singh has completed three dozen of technical projects in India and abroad. His two NPTEL (YouTube) video lectures on HVDC Transmission and Power System Operation & Control are very popular.

Prof Singh was Chairman, IEEE UP Section for 2013 & 2014, and presently, he is IEEE R10 (Asia-Pacific) Conference & Technical Seminar Coordinator 2015-18. Presently Prof Singh is India Council Chairman and R10 Vice-Chair, Technical Activities (2019-2020) of IEEE, the largest professional body in Engineering. Dr. Mohsen Khorasany

Mohsen received the B.Sc. degree and M.Sc. degree, both in Electrical Engineering, in 2010 and 2012, respectively. He completed his PhD studies in the same field at the Queensland University of Technology in 2020. He is currently a Postdoctoral Research Fellow with the Department of Electrical and Computer Systems Engineering, Monash University. He is involved in several projects, including the Monash Smart City project. He is a senior member of IEEE and is the technical reviewer of several journals. His research interests include distributed energy resources integration, power systems optimization, electricity market design, peer to peer trading, transactive energy markets, and distributed optimization.

Dr. G. Rigatos, obtained a diploma (1995) and a Ph.D. (2000) both from the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, of the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA), Greece. In 2001 he was a post-doctoral researcher at the Institut de Recherche en Informatique et Systèmes Aléatoires IRISA, in Rennes France. Since 2002 he holds a Researcher position (currently Grade Α – Research Director) at the Industrial Systems Institute (Greek Secretariat for Research and Technology), on the topic of “Modelling and Control of Industrial Systems”. In 2007 he was an invited professor (maître des conférences) at Université Paris XI (Institut d’ Electronique Fondamentale). In 2012 he held a Lecturer Position at the Department of Engineering, of Harper-Adams University College, in Shropshire, UK on the topic of “Mechatronics and Artificial Intelligence”. He has been also an adjunct professor in Greek Universities where he has taught courses on systems and control theory. His research interests include the areas of computational intelligence and adaptive systems, mechatronics, robotics and control, optimization and fault diagnosis. He holds an Editor position in accredited international journals, he is a Senior Member of IEEE, a Member and CEng of IET and also a member of IMACS.
Since June 2016, he holds a four-year visiting Professor position at the University of Salerno, Italy. Moreover, since November 2016 he holds a three-year visiting Professor position at the University of Northumbria, UK.

Dr. Vahid Hosseinnezhad

Vahid Hosseinnezhad is an experienced researcher with a demonstrated history of working in the higher education industry. Vahid received his B.Sc., M.Sc., and Ph.D. degrees in electrical power engineering in 2008, 2011, and 2017, respectively. In 2018 and 2019, he worked as a Postdoctoral Research Associate on the Energy Demand Response at the University of Salerno, Italy. Then he joined North China Electric Power University as an invited researcher for a short time. Now, he is with the School of Engineering at University College Cork, and he is working on his second postdoctoral research project entitled CENTS (Cooperative Energy Trading System).
He is the author of several journal articles, conference papers, and book chapters. He is also a technical reviewer for multiple journals. He is now the guest editor of an Energies special issue entitled “Energy Scheduling and Trading in Microgrids and Local Energy Communities.” His research interests are the electricity market, transactive energy management, demand response, optimization, IoT, and blockchain.

Dr. Erkan Dursun has been working on Distributed Generation (DG) and renewable energy systems for 12 years. He is Asst.Prof. at Marmara University, Faculty of Technology, Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Istanbul, Turkey. He worked in UNIDO-ICHET (United Nations Industrial Development Organization- International Centre for Hydrogen Energy Technologies) from 2010 to 2012 as visiting researcher. He also worked as a researcher at European Commission, JRC Institute for Energy and Transport (IET), between 2012-2013.
His Ph.d. thesis about the photovoltaic/wind/fuel cell hybrid power system. This concept shows that different renewable sources can be used simultaneously to power off-grid applications. The stand-alone power system consists of photovoltaic (PV) panels, a wind turbine, PEMFC, and electrolyser. His papers have received more than 500 citations in SCI database of Thomson Reuters. His current research interests focus on intelligent control of hybrid power systems, smart grid, and smart cities.

Prof. Alireza Zakariazadeh

Prof. Zakariazadeh received the B.Sc. (Hons.) degree in electrical engineering from University of Mazandaran, Babol, in 2007 and the M.Sc. (Hons.) and the Ph.D. degrees in electrical engineering from Iran University of Science and Technology, Tehran in 2010 and 2014, respectively. Since 2016, he has been an Assistant Professor with University of Science and Technology of Mazandaran, Behshahr, Iran. His research interests include smart grid, demand response, Electric vehicles and stochastic optimization. He is the author of more than 100 journal articles, conference papers and technical reports. He is the reviewer of several journals and the author of two books about smart grids. Also, He is the co-author of the Elsevier book chapter entitled “Iranian smart grid: road map and metering program”.
He has been involved in various national projects as coordinator or manager that topics include placement of electric vehicle charging stations using GIS, software development of electric vehicle charging load forecasting, analysis and improvement of distribution companies load factor index and energy audit of various industries.

Dr. Hongxun Hui

Dr. Hongxun Hui

Hongxun Hui received the B. Eng and Ph.D. degrees in electrical engineering from Zhejiang University, China in 2015 and 2020, respectively. He is currently a Post-doctoral Fellow with the State Key Laboratory of Internet of Things for Smart City, University of Macau. From 2015 to 2020, he was a member of Smart Grid Operation and Optimization Laboratory in Zhejiang University. From 2018 to 2019, he was a visiting scholar at the Advanced Research Institute in Virginia Tech. He has authored or coauthored 1 book, 40 papers and 10 issued patents.
Dr. Hui was elected in the 1st batch of the Academic Rising Star Program, and was the Vice President of IEEE Industry Applications Society Student Branch Chapter from 2018 to 2020 in Zhejiang University. He serves as reviewers for many international journals, including IEEE, IET, CSEE, Elsevier, Springer, and Wiley. He was also the recipient of the Outstanding Reviewer Award from Journal of Modern Power Systems and Clean Energy in 2019.

Ersan Kabalci (M’09, SM’18), received the B.S. and M.S. degrees in Electronics and Computer Education from Gazi University, Ankara, Turkey, in 2003 and in 2006 respectively. He received the Ph.D. degree from Gazi University, Ankara, Turkey, in 2010 with the thesis on implementing an enhanced modulation scheme for multilevel inverters. From 2005 to 2007, he was with Gazi University as a lecturer. He is currently with the Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering Department since 2010 where he became an Assistant Professor in 2011; an Associate Professor on power electronics and drives in 2013; and full professor in 2019.

In 2018 he has been nominated member of the panel of experts for reviewing the cost-benefit analysis for the development of the Italian Transmission Grid by the Italian Energy Regulator (ARERA).
