Prof. Jordi Arbiol

Graduated in Physics at Universitat de Barcelona (UB) in 1997, where he also obtained his PhD (European Doctorate and PhD Extraordinary Award) in 2001 in the field of transmission electron microscopy (TEM) applied to nanostructured materials. He also worked at the microscopy facilities and as Assistant Professor at UB, focusing in TEM advanced techniques, such as HAADF electron tomography, HREELS and in general high resolution (S)TEM. From 2009 to 2015 he was Group Leader at Institut de Ciència de Materials de Barcelona, ICMAB-CSIC and Scientific Supervisor of its electron microscopy facilities Since 2013 he is Vice-President of the Spanish Microscopy Society (SME), and since 2009 he was Member of its Executive Board. Since 2015 he is the leader of the Group of Advanced Electron Nanoscopy at Institut Català de Nanociència i Nanotecnologia (ICN2), CSIC and The Barcelona Institute of Science and Technology (BIST). He has been awarded with the 2014 EMS Outstanding Paper Award, EU40 Materials Prize 2014 (E-MRS) and listed in the Top 40 under 40 Power List (2014) by The Analytical Scientist.

Research interests: My research focuses on the design, production and manipulation of nanomaterials, their functional characterization and their technological application. I use solution-based processes to produce these nanomaterials and to fabricate devices. Solution-based methods allow both a unique control over composition and crystal phase at the nanometer scale and a high versatility in the development of socially and economically-relevant technologies. From an application point of view, I have centered my work in the development of materials for energy conversion and storage. In particular, in my group, we develop solution-processed solar cells using spray deposition technologies. We also develop thermoelectric nanocomposites from the bottom-up assembly of colloidal nanocrystals. My third main research line is the production of multi-metallic and metal-metal oxide nano-heterostructures for catalysis, including photo and electrocatalysis.

His areas of interests are computational modelling of mesoscopic and nanoscopic semiconductor and superconducting nanostructures, like phase transitions (structural and melting), artificial atoms (quantum dots and coupled quantum dots), graphene and other two dimensional atomic layered systems.
Peeters is a Fellow of the American Physical Society and the European Physical Society. He is a member of the Royal Flemish Academy of Belgium and of the Academia Europaea. The University of Szeged awarded him a Doctor Honoris Causa and in 2013 he was awarded the Francqui Chair. He is associate editor of Journal of Applied Physics, co-editor of Europhysics Letters and member of the excecutive editorial board of Solid State Communications. He published over 1000 papers with more than 25,000 citations and h-index 72.

Prof Samuel Sanchez

Samuel (PhD Chemistry, UAB, 2008) is a Group Leader at the Max Planck Institute for Intelligent Systems, Stuttgart, Germany, and ICREA Research Professor at the Institute for Bioengineering of Catalonia (IBEC) in Barcelona. He worked in The Netherlands, Japan, Dresden and Stuttgart in Germany. He received several awards: the Guinness World Record® 2010 for smallest jet engine; the ERC Starting Grant 2012 , the MIT TR35 as “Innovator of the year under 35” Spanish edition 2014 and within Innovators U35 Europe, He received the Princess of Girona Scientific Research Award 2015 and the “Joven Relevante 2016” by the Círculo Ecuestre of Barcelona”. Samuel has published more than 95 scientific publications with about 3300 citations, h-index 30 and presented about 100 invited talks.
