The Mediterranean Experts on Climate and Environmental Change (MedECC) is an open and independent international scientific expert network founded in 2015 to provide support to decision-makers, stakeholders, and the general public with the best available scientific knowledge on climate and environmental change and the current and future associated risks in the Mediterranean Basin. All scientific members contribute in their individual capacity and without financial compensation. MedECC scientists are based in 35 countries, including 19 countries registered as Contracting Parties to the Convention for the Protection of the Marine Environment and the Coastal Region of the Mediterranean (Barcelona Convention). In November 2020, MedECC published the report on climate and environmental change in the Mediterranean (First Mediterranean Assessment Report, MAR1).
Following the publication of MAR1, several important issues have emerged that require deeper analysis, often associated with the appearance of new scientific studies. It was therefore proposed that the MedECC community applies the same approach as for the MAR1 to the preparation of three Special Reports assessing the following issues in the Mediterranean: 1) Climate and environmental coastal risks, 2) Climate-water-energy-food-ecosystems nexus, and 3) Environmental change, conflict, and human migration. Around 150 scientists and experts from 30 countries are volunteering their time and expertise to produce these assessments. In November 2022, the tables of contents of the Special Reports were shared with policymakers, including governments. The Zero Order Draft (ZOD) of each report underwent an internal peer-review.
The First Order Draft (FOD) of the Special Report on climate and environmental coastal risks, together with its draft Summary for Policymakers (SPM), underwent external peer-review between May and July 2023. The online consultation with governments and relevant stakeholders on the SPM was held in June-July 2023. The author team then addressed each comments and developed the final draft SPM for the plenary consultation.
The particular aim of the plenary consultation is to ascertain that the findings of the MedECC Special Report on climate and environmental coastal risks, as presented in the SPM, are fully comprehensible and unambiguous and that the remarks from the online consultation have been well integrated. »
The draft report and the SPM should under no circumstances be distributed outside the participants of the plenary discussion and their institutions. They must not be shared, reproduced nor quoted in any way. They must not be made publicly available by any means.
